The Product Support Initiative:

The U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO/Technical Committee (TC) 176 created the Product Support Initiative (PSI) as a means of seeking U.S. input on the new ISO 9001:2000 standard and related documents in a manner similar to the validation process used during their development.

The specific goals of PSI are

  • To help enhance the value of the ISO 9000:2000 family,
  • To gather information that will provide insight to organizations starting the implementation or transition process
  • To provide relevant information about the new standards that can assist in their implementation.
  • To help organizations conform to ISO 9001:2000 and
  • To provide inputs on the implementation experiences of organizations.
  • To provide useful inputs for future revisions to the ISO 9000 family.

The ISO 9001 Survey:

The ISO 9001 survey is an online questionnaire. The survey's purposes are to provide quantifiable measurements of the experiences of organizations implementing ISO 9001:2000 and provide feedback to the U. S. Technical Advisory Group in preparation for the 2005 revision of the ISO 9000 series standards. Summary articles have appeared in Quality Progress in April, The Informed Outlook, Quality System Update in March 2002, ISO Management Systems in November-December 2002 and other media. View the survey online. If you decide to complete the survey, your inputs will be a valuable addition to our data base and will help others in their efforts to comply with ISO 9001:2000. This process will result in useful inputs for future revisions of ISO 9001.

ISO 9004:2000

The Product Support Initiative (PSI) has formed a new supporting project with its committee being chartered to focus on ISO-9004:2000 and to determine its acceptance, usage and effectiveness and to propose potential changes for the next revision of the 9004 standard.

The goals of this new committee include five items:

  1. Seek level of audience awareness of ISO-9004:2000 - find out who is the audience?
  2. Is this document being used and how?
  3. Solicit feedback from users.
  4. Find out how this document can be made more useful.
  5. Find out the standard's perceived relationship to other standards and excellence award criteria.

The intent of ISO-9004:2000 committee was created to set guidance for organizations wishing to achieve performance improvement by selecting and following business practices that enable them to accomplish cost effective performance as the best means of satisfying all the interested parties of their businesses.  The committee will not interpret ISO-9001:2000.

With the current popularity of other business excellence programs such as Six Sigma, Malcolm Baldridge, and related various quality improvement strategies, the committee plans to gather, inform and provide valuable U.S. input for the next generation of the ISO-9004 document.

The committee has published an on-line survey aimed at identifying usage, benefits and cost savings from using ISO 9004:2000. View the ISO 9004 Survey.
